Microsoft VPN Support in Defender 5

Since Microsoft’s inclusion of extensive support for virtual private network (VPN) technologies in its Windows family of operating systems, support within Defender was inevitable.

A VPN is an extension of a private network that encompassing links across shared or public networks like the Internet. VPN connections leverage the IP connectivity of the Internet using a combination of tunneling and encryption to securely connect two remote points, such as a remote worker, and their office base.

Defender utilizes the EAP protocol to integrate the already well familiar two-factor authentication into the existing user authentication process.

Extensible Authentication Protocol

Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) is a standard supported by many Microsoft networking components, utilized in the protection of the security of 802.1x wireless LANs, wired LANs, dial-up and Virtual Private Networks VPNs. With the added EAP support in Defender, integration of Defender with these Microsoft components becomes straightforward.

The following Microsoft components support the EAP protocol, and thus Defender as a strong authentication solution:

  • Microsoft Remote Access Clients and Servers for both dial-up and VPN (PPTP and L2TP/IPSec) (implemented as an extension to PPP)
  • Microsoft IEEE 802.1x compatible wireless and wired LAN clients – (implemented as defined in the IEEE 802.1x draft standard)
  • Microsoft RADIUS server, called Internet Authentication Service (IAS) – (implemented as defined in RFC 2865.)
